Josh Smith | New Monotypes

Donald Taglialatella is pleased to announce the first collaboration between World House Editions and the American painter and collagist, Josh Smith (b.1976).

For this, his first significant print project, the artist created a series of 66 monotypes at Maurice Sanchez’s print workshop, Derriere L’Etoile Studios, in October, 2009, in New York.  Smith worked with lithographic inks and painted directly onto aluminum plates which were then fed through a press, resulting in uniquely printed works on paper.

Josh Smith’s works are widely known for negotiating the concept of an artist’s “signature style” as evidenced in works where his own name appears repeatedly both signified and abstracted.  His paintings further explore the contentious relationship between abstraction and realism, challenging aesthetic dominance and re-contextualizing the mundane.  Counterbalancing his body of work between the deliberate and deliberately random, Smith confronts the notion of compositions created entirely by chance.

A selection of the monotypes will be featured at World House Editions’ stand at the 2009 Editions|Artists’ Books Fair from 05 – 08 November in New York.
