Donald Taglialatella is pleased to announce that World House Editions will participate in the 2011 Editions|Artists’ Books Fair.  This showing is the fifth year in a row for World House Editions.    The fair will take place at the former DIA Art Foundation building located at 548 West 22nd Street (between 10th and 11th Avenues) in New York.  It will open on Thursday, 03 November from 6 to 9pm and will run through Sunday, 06 November.  Hours can be found at www.eabfair.com.     The World House Editions stand is 58, located on Floor 2.

London-based, South African painter Nicky Hoberman (b.1967) will make her print debut at E|AB with a selection of new monotypes created in September at Peter Kosowicz’s print studio, Thumbprint Editions in London. These prints mark the artists’ first significant print project and relate to the “Disguise” series of paintings she is presently working on.  The artist has said of this series:

In these works, I’m investigating concepts of isolation, identity and individuality.  Earlier paintings portrayed girls who inhabited a world where all was dissociated; however physically close they were to each other, they remained isolated and emotionally disconnected.  This series explores the concept of disguises both as a means of hiding (or avoiding communication and relating) and an expression of dual personality.  My protagonists are hidden behind masks, face paint and veils and are camouflaged by trees, bushes and flowers. These gardens are metaphorical settings alluding to the psychic space of relationships.  Much is withheld, as the viewer only partially glimpses my protagonists, who evade real revelation, underlining a sense of dislocation and exclusion.  There is always something of a tension between wanting to be seen and blending in, and I guess this is one of the anxieties of childhood.  On a personal level I always longed for the cloak of invisibility.  Of course the inner world of the child is often a very savage place, full of terrors and sublime places too, hidden behind the mask of innocence, in that way you don’t need the disguise, childhood does it. There is something impenetrable in a young face.

This project is the first collaboration between Nicky Hoberman and World House Editions.

Also featured this year will be two new mixed technique color etchings by the London-based, Irish painter and printmaker Mark Francis (b.1962)Created between July and October in London also at the workshop of Thumbprint Editions, these new prints represent a stylistic departure from what World House Editions has published and exhibited previously at E|AB.  What is immediate in the new prints is a network of grids, lattices and pathways that, although subtlety present in the artists’ earlier work, are now more formal and prominent.   Mark Francis’ new prints convey a strong sense of geometry, structure and in a sense, a degree of mapping with their dominant horizontal (longitudinal) and vertical (latitudinal) lines. The recent paintings and now prints by Mark Francis have been inspired from the artists’ residency at the Institute of Astronomy at Cambridge University, where he spent “quite a lot of time” in the library looking at diagrams of planetary systems.  Whereas the earlier work had its formal tension broken by cells, microbes and synapses, the newer work has more of a dialogue with minimal painting  – from the micro to the macro. The formal mapping structure of the work is now dotted with what could interpreted to be stars, somewhat akin to a constellation, which break the formal tension of the geometry.  Upon even closer inspection, a painterly field exists below the surface of the grid, a cosmos perhaps, creating a push-pull affect and trapping the viewer’s gaze.

This project is the fourth collaboration between Mark Francis and World House Editions.
