Brian Alfred: In Praise of Shadows
Produced in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name at Ameringer McEnery Yohe gallery in New York City. May 26th — July 1st, 2016.
This body of work was made in response to Alfred’s month long trip to Japan to research a project for Japan Railways to create animations in relation to the Niigata area for the Genbi Shinkansen, a high-speed railway service. The paintings are all small works on canvas of views that Alfred found during his travels. The title of the show references Jun’ichirō Tanizaki’s celebrated book of 1933, In Praise of Shadows.
The book includes intimate sources photographed by the artist printed in risograph, all of the works printed in offset, and features an essay by Sarah K. Rich and a conversation between the artist and the director of the Andy Warhol Museum, Eric Shiner.
112 pages, first printing is an edition of only 500, beautifully designed by Aurore Chauve, printed by STIPA, France and published by Yundler Brondino Verlag in a format of 11 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches (22 x 29 cm)
